How The Submit Button Is Killing Blogging

Picture this. On your drive home from work you have this crazy thought. It’s not much, maybe just a blurp, but it’s interesting and you decide to write something about it later. After dinner you scribble a quick post, but something holds you back from publishing. Now your guess is as good as mine, but I bet it’s the submit button that’s killing your post.

I recognize myself in this behavior. I’ve seen it happen to others as well. Most bloggers -especially those just starting- have this build in desire to write something that’s perfect. The problem is it doesn’t work that way. Raw thoughts don’t magically become shiny polished while writing them down.

People are scared of posting raw thoughts. I can understand why. When you hit the submit button it’s out there forever. You don’t want to make any mistakes. It’s like the fear people have that doctors will operate the wrong leg, or the fear that the tattoo guy will misspell your lovers name.

The submit button is the final station in your blog publishing cycle. When you hit it, you give away the control over your writing. Everybody may see it, link it, share or comment it. That thought is scary at first. Actually, it’s always a bit scary. But take it from me; it gets easier each time you do it.

If you have submit-o-phobia, I have some simple advise for you. Just stop trying to write perfect articles. Try writing decent articles first. Professionals writers have to write every day. They have deadlines to make. They don’t have time to make each article perfect. So they settle for what they have time for; writing decent.

I myself am just trying to write decent articles. They don’t have to be great or perfect, they just need to transfer the message. Spelling matters, choice of words doesn’t. If I look back at my post and am unhappy with a word choice, I can always click the edit button to correct it. The beauty of having your own blog :-)

The important thing is getting thoughts out there, so stop letting the submit button control your life.
