When it comes to video, YouTube is still king and ruler of the sharing domain. But have you noticed they have hardly innovated last year? Sure, the Google takeover brought shiny new “ads and stats” possibilities, but I’m talking about the more basic functionality here.
Let’s face it, technologically speaking there are some great YouTube competitors out there. Take Blip.tv for example. They offer a supreme image quality, don’t put a logo in your video, and they give your viewers the possibility to download the source material. Which I may add is great for archiving purposes
Another example is Viddler.com who also offers a supreme image quality. Perhaps more interesting than that, is that they allow users to add comments straight to the timeline of the video. That means no more writing down those timecodes, you can respond instantly! Also, unlike YouTube they allow items to last over ten minutes each which for some vloggers will definitely be a breather.
Now I’m not saying YouTube doesn’t have nice features. They have a strong community, a stable platform and are without a doubt the best known video sharing service in the world. There’s certainly room for improvement, but there’s something to say for their steady course as well. In spite of others bringing a superb quality and featureset to the table, YouTube is still dominating big time. Here’s my take on why:
#1. YouTube is part of the Google empire
Once you start using one Google product, it’s not that big a step to start using the next. Google products integrate nicely with each other so there’s a powerful incentive to using the broad variety of webbased services Google has to offer. Most end-users stick with that what’s easy and works for them; they already like Google products, so why not use the video one they’re offering?
#2. YouTube is the video sharing site your mom knows
I don’t have any numbers on it, but it’s safe to assume that YouTube is the best know video sharing brand in the world. The few people I know that don’t know YouTube can be counted on one hand. YouTube is the site that everybody -even your mom- knows, so it makes sense to use them as your service of choice.
#3. YouTube is integrated in almost everything
If third-party vendors want to include a video sharing service in their product, YouTube is always the service of choice. It’s included in almost everything, so you have no compatibility worries: everybody can watch the videos you create. In their own time, their own way and using their own channel.
#4. YouTube has the largest audience
According to Wikipedia, YouTube had 79 million visitors viewing over three billion videos. Without a doubt it has the largest audience in the world, which in the end is what’s important to video publishers.
#5. YouTube will offer live video streaming this year
I started this post with a bit of a rant towards the lack of innovation Google has been showing after the inquisition of YouTube. While doing some background searches for this post I stumbled upon this post on TechCrunch, stating that YouTube will offer live video streaming as an option somewhere in 2008. This could hugely drive the amount of video’s posted on YouTube by video loggers.
#6. YouTube is used by big company brands
There are a lot of big company’s that use branded YouTube channels. Heck, even the European Union uses YouTube to post videos about a variety of topics. When services are backed up by big company names, end-users have one more reason to use that channel. If it’s fine for Nike it’s fine for me, right?
